The name Portugal is derived from the Roman-Celtic place name Portu Cale , where Porto means harbour and Cal was the name of a Celtic goddess. Portugal is said to be one of the oldest countries of Europe. It was in 15th and 16th century that Portugal rose to be one of the world’s major economic, political and military powers. Through out the ages this country has been invaded by many other countries and still Portugal seemed to manage its independence by various revolutions. This country is said to be the first country, even before the USA and UK, to abolish slavery. Portugal still stands still with an enormous natural calamity that had once ravaged this country. Today Portugal is one of the major countries in Europe being the only exporter of cork and cork products and as the leader for producing a great variety of olive oils. Many kings had ruled Portugal for centuries, some dynasties even ruled for 800 years as well.
